THX - 1138

For my project I have selected THX - 1138 as the film I will be adapting into a video game concept. THX - 1138 is a science fiction film directed by George Lucas and released in 1971. The film is about a dystopian totalitarian society in which the population are controlled with mood-altering drugs and religious indoctrination. In this society people are housed in pairs and any sexual activity is prohibited. The titular protagonist THX 1138 works in a factory that produces the robots that function as police officers in he city. THX is paired with LUH 3417, a woman who becomes disillusioned with the state and makes a decision for her and THX to stop taking their medication.

The city is situated under ground but despite this has vast futuristic buildings and highways. The environment is made up of brutalist and minimalistic architecture, and gives the city a feeling of sterility and coldness that matches the tone of the film.

The robot police that the city use to keep control have a minimal design to them, being dressed in black leather with a white helmet and a silver face-plate that has basic human features. The robots wield bō fighting sticks that are used to suppress and control prisoners.

The vehicles used in the film are based on contemporary cars and bikes that were in use around the time the film was made. The car that THX uses to escape is based on the Lola T70 and features modifications to the engine and interior to show to the viewer that the vehicle is powered by a turbine engine.
